Violation of the Norms (PSYC Entry #10)
For these last few class periods of my general psychology class we’ve been discussing social norms. I’m sure you can see where this might be going. Thus, for this blog we were asked to do a single task – violate a social norm. (Granted that it was not illegal or completely out of line).
My Violation: When I stepped on to the bus on a non-rainy day I decided to open my umbrella on the bus, and then when I got off the bus I closed my umbrella and went on with my day.
Thoughts before the action: I must admit I was quite excited about this little event. The thought of just coming across so odd for that single moment in time pleased me. However, I was a little unsure if I’d actually follow through with the action since I tend to be conscientious of all my actions, and this was clearly going go to be disrupting the normal order of the bus-riding day.
After the fact: Well, to make a long story short I followed through with the plan completely. And rather than blushing ten shades of red and pink like I thought I would, I kind of just smiled to myself. I was rather content. Granted this was probably because of the fact that I knew I was doing this for a class. I know that I do not follow all social norms, but if there is one thing I’m certain of – it is not an easy thing to do. At least not those that are significant actions in themselves.
I would love to hear your thoughts on my little stunt, or even other social norms you find see committed or you commit yourself.
